Hyperpigmentation Treatment UK: Your Complete Guide
Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns in the UK, and one of the most treatable. This guide explains what causes it, which ingredients work, and how to build an effective routine using First Lady London’s UK-formulated brightening range.
What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of patches of skin caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. It can appear as dark spots, uneven skin tone, post-inflammatory marks (from acne or injury), melasma, or age spots. It affects all skin tones but is particularly common and often more pronounced in deeper skin tones.
Common causes
- Sun exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin production, causing sunspots and worsening existing pigmentation.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): dark marks left after acne, eczema, cuts or other skin trauma.
- Melasma: hormonal pigmentation often triggered by pregnancy or contraception, typically appearing as symmetrical patches on the face.
- Ageing: age spots (liver spots) develop as melanin production becomes less evenly distributed over time.
- Friction: repeated rubbing can darken elbows, knees and inner thighs.
Which ingredients treat hyperpigmentation?
Effective hyperpigmentation treatment works by interrupting the process that creates excess melanin (melanogenesis), speeding up cell turnover to shed pigmented skin cells, or both. Here are the key actives to look for.
Kojic acid
Kojic acid is derived from the fermentation of fungi and is one of the most studied skin-brightening ingredients available. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that controls melanin production. Regular use fades existing dark spots and prevents new ones forming. It is safe for most skin types when used as directed. Read our full kojic acid guide or shop the First Lady Fast Actives range.
Glutathione
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant naturally produced by the body. Topically applied, it reduces oxidative stress in the skin and inhibits melanin synthesis, leading to a brighter, more even complexion. Clinical trials have shown measurable skin-brightening effects from both oral supplementation and topical use. First Lady’s GlutaWhite range is built around this ingredient, combined with collagen, truffle and argan for comprehensive brightening and nourishment.
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
AHAs such as lactic acid and glycolic acid exfoliate the surface of the skin, accelerating the shedding of pigmented cells and revealing fresher skin beneath. Lactic acid is gentler than glycolic acid and also hydrates as it exfoliates, making it well suited to sensitive or dry skin. It is a key ingredient in the Fast Actives Maxi Tone line and features throughout the Bright Express range.
Turmeric
Turmeric contains curcumin, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that also inhibits melanin synthesis. It is particularly effective for inflammation-driven pigmentation and is gentle enough for sensitive skin. First Lady’s Bright Express Turmeric with Saffron range combines it with saffron, another brightening botanical with antioxidant properties.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) inhibits tyrosinase and neutralises free radicals that trigger excess melanin production. It also boosts collagen synthesis, improving skin texture alongside tone. It works synergistically with kojic acid and AHAs, amplifying the brightening effect of a combined routine.
How to build a hyperpigmentation treatment routine
Consistency is the single most important factor in treating hyperpigmentation. Most actives take four to twelve weeks of regular use to show visible results. A complete routine covers three steps: cleanse, treat, moisturise, repeated morning and evening.
Step 1: Cleanse and exfoliate
Start with a brightening soap or shower cream to lift dead skin and prepare the surface for active ingredients. Exfoliating soaps containing AHAs or kojic acid double up as a mild treatment step. Use two to three times per week for exfoliation; a gentler cleanser can be used daily.
Step 2: Tone and treat
A brightening toner applied after cleansing removes residue and delivers active ingredients directly into the skin. Follow with a targeted treatment serum or cream. Serums have a lighter texture and penetrate quickly; creams provide a richer treatment layer and are better for drier skin types.
Step 3: Moisturise and protect
Seal in treatments with a moisturising lotion or milk. In the morning, always apply SPF on top of your brightening routine: UV exposure will undo progress and worsen pigmentation if skin is left unprotected.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to treat hyperpigmentation?
Most people see a noticeable improvement within four to eight weeks of consistent use. Deeper or longer-standing pigmentation may take three to six months to fade significantly. Stopping treatment early is the most common reason results plateau.
Is it safe to use skin brightening products every day?
Yes, provided the products are formulated without harsh bleaching agents such as hydroquinone. All First Lady London formulas use naturally derived brightening ingredients and are designed for regular daily use. Always patch test a new product before full application.
Can hyperpigmentation come back?
It can, particularly if the underlying cause (sun exposure, inflammation, hormonal changes) continues. Sun protection is essential: apply SPF daily over your brightening routine to prevent UV from triggering new pigmentation.
Do these products work on dark skin tones?
Yes. First Lady London products are formulated specifically with deeper and melanin-rich skin tones in mind. The brand was founded to provide high-quality brightening skincare for all skin types, including those most affected by hyperpigmentation.
